民吉は釉薬の技法を習得した九州の佐々村に妻を置いて文化四年(一八○七)瀬戸へ帰る事にした。
帰途、熊本県八代の高田窯を見学して同年六月十八日、三年ぶりに瀬戸へ帰着し、その三年後の
文化七年(一八一○)に加藤民吉は五十三才で死去した。
瀬戸へ帰着後、生前、九州に残した妻と娘が民吉を尋ねてきたが、会うことが出来なかった。当時は
他地方の技術を習得する事は産業スパイ行為であり極刑に当たる行為であった。従って、妻の背後に
肥前藩(佐賀県)の密偵がいて民吉を付け狙っている可能性が非常に高かった為、瀬戸の大恩人である
民吉を守るべく、瀬戸及び尾張藩の役人が妻と民吉を会わせないようにした。
”妻と娘は民吉に会うことが出来ない為、悲しんで祖母懐の池に身投げし、民吉に感謝する「せともの祭り」
に妻の涙が雨となって降る”というのが逸話であるが、これは想像上の話であり、実際には妻は九州で
生を全うしたようである。実際、佐賀県の福本仁左衛門の墓地に小さな墓標があり墓標の戒名と
佐賀県の寺の過去帳の戒名が略同じの為、妻は実在しており、身投げはしなかったようである。

尾張藩は瀬戸の産業新興の為民吉の九州での釉薬等磁器技術習得をバックアップしたが、上述のように
当時の司法制度では逮捕されれば、尾張藩としても民吉を肥前藩へ差し出さなければならなかったが、
恐らく、そうした事態になったとしても、尾張藩は途中で民吉が死亡したとか口実を作って、民吉を救った
のではないかと推測する。

Tamikichi acquired the technique to glaze and decided to leave for Seto in 1807, leaving her wife behind
in Sasa village in Kyushu. On his way back to Seto, he visited Takada kiln in Kumamoto. After an interval
of three years, he arrived Seto and three years later he died at the age of 53.
While he was alive after his return to Seto, his wife and daughter left behind in Kyushu visited him, but
they could not see him. At that time, to acquire techniques in the other regions was considered industrial
espionage which activity corresponded to death penalty. So, very likely a spy or a secret agent of Hizen
clan (Saga Prefecture at present) behind her was aiming for Tamikichi. Government officials from Owari
clan as well as Seto try to keep him from seeing her so that they may protect him.
"Her wife and daughter felt so sad so that they threw themselves into a pond in Seto. Their sad feeling
causes rain in Setomono Festival which is held to express thanks to Tamikichi. " This is anecdote. But,
this is imaginary story, not real one. Actually she seemed to live her life fully till the end.
In fact, the graveyard in Nizaemon Fukumoto in Saga Prefecture has a small grave post on which
posthumous Buddhist name, Renshitsuchikou-Zenjo are named, which name is very similar to the one
shown on the family register of deaths stored in temple in Saga Prefecture.

Owari clan supported Tamikichi in aquiring glazing techniques in Kyushu in order to boom up ceramics
industry in Seto. Under the judicial system at that time, however, if arrested of stealing techniques,
Owari clan could not help giving him to Hizen clan. Even if such affairs happened, Owari clan would
make an excuse in which Tamikich died on the way to Hizen clan to save him, I presume.
