Ogane Shrine (formally called Kogane Shrine) Scaring off summer epidemic - Passing through ring called 'Chinowa' (photo taken on June 30, 2002) |
Ogane Shrine is the shrine of the local Shinto deity in the area where I live. June 30 , 2002 is the day "Wakuguri" is carried out as follows: The shrine distributes the people under the protection of the local deity "Hitogata" (meaning small paper slip of human shape). They write their name and ages of their families on "Hitogata", and then stroke each body of their families. One each of their families brings "Hitogata" with him (or her) and enters into and turns "Chinowa" made of reed in the shape of figure 8 three times while reciting the following phrase: "Minadukino Nagoshinoharai Suruhitowa Chitosenoinochi Nobutoiunari" (meaning 'When performing their ablutions (or purification ceremony) by passing through Chinowa in the end of June in lunar calendar, it is said that the people do not suffer from epidemic and the life expectancy is prolonged). And then, he or she puts "Hitogata" into water pail (bucket), and worships the deity at Haiden (or Building for worshipping deities). This 'Wakuguri' ceremony is completed. |
