瀬戸市赤津地区の窯元Pottery at Akazu,

２００４年１２月４日、犬山国際交流協会通訳ボランティアグループ及び
瀬戸英語ボランティアグループのみなさんと瀬戸市赤津地区の窯元を
訪れました。
Member from the volunteer of the interpreter of the Inuyama international
exchange society group and from Seto English volunteer group visited
pottery at Akazu district in Seto city on December 4, 2004.

フィリピンの季節外れの台風に直撃されるのでは、と心配していましたが
小雨がぱらつく程度でやれやれでした。
It just drizzled on and off although worrying about being hit directly by
out-of-season typhoon generated in the Philippines. So, I felt relieved.

１６４０年代創業した窯元｢霞仙陶苑｣の１２代目である加藤裕重氏に
赤津焼、瀬戸焼、土、釉薬、焼成等についてのご説明や質疑応答が
英語や日本語で行われ、あっという間に予定時間になってしまいました。
Akazu-ware, Seto-ware, clay, firing and so on were explained in English
and Japanese by Mr. Hiroshige Kato who is the 12th generation of pottery
"Kasen-touen" that had been established in 1640's. Moreover the question
and answer were done, and the schedule time passed with surprising swiftness.

成形現場では、加藤氏のお父さんがロクロ成形をされており、同じ建物内で
成形された陶壁が土間で自然乾燥されていました。
Mr. Kato's father was throwing in a forming site. While, a pottery wall fomed
in the same building　was naturally dried at the earth floor in the same building.

この陶壁はその後、（素焼）→釉掛け→焼成といった工程を経て、完成されます。
完成された陶壁は、この窯元の敷地内に今年１２月２３日オープン予定の
レストランの壁面の一部になる予定です。
Afterwards, this pottery wall is completed through the process of (biscuit firing)
→ glazing → Refiring. The finished pottery wall will become a part of the wall of a
restaurant scheduled to be opened in the pottery's site on December 23, 2004.

名鉄浜松ホテルと提携し、１４０席のレストランになる予定です。
窯元製造の陶器の器に料理が盛りつけられるようです。
The restaurant is scheduled to have 140 seats in cooperation with Meitetsu
Hamamatsu Hotel. Cuisine will be dished up in vessel made by the pottery.

この窯元の敷地は小高い山の頂きまで広がっており、天気が良いと、ここから、
名古屋のツインタワービルを望むことができるそうです。ここには、初代（代々）の
当主や徳川義直公に感謝する為の陶製の碑が、夫々立てられています。
The pottery's site extends to the top of slightly elevated mountain.
and Twin Tower Bldg in Nagoya can be viewed from here when it is fine.
To express gratitude for the heads of the family from generation to generation
and Mr. Yoshinao Tokugawa, lord of Owari domain, each ceramic monument is
put up respectively.

広い敷地には雑木が紅葉し、建物と見事に調和しています。
Miscellaneous trees turns red in commodious premises, and harmonizes with the
building splendidly.

この小高い山の斜面には登窯が設けられています。
この登窯は焚口のある室と別に３室がある連房式登窯です。
焚口の上の１室は横狭間、その上の２室は縦狭間構造。
A climbing kiln has been built on the slope of this slightly elevated mountain.
This climbing kiln is consecutive one with 3 chambers besides a chamber with
firing port.
A chamber just over the chamber with the firing port is of horizontal interstice
structure and the other two chambers are of vertical interstice structure.

帰りは、瀬戸市の陶器卸商｢丸一国府商店｣に立ち寄りました。
In the way back, we stopped by Maruichi-Kokufu Shouten, ceramic wholesaler.
