On March 5, 2006, we ate a lunch at a restaurant "Premier" in Nisshinn City ,
visited Iwasaki Castle, and then Kosenjo Park.

,Although I tried to visit the castel until now, I could not find out the access to a
parking lot and have given up entering the castle. I finally came to fiind the access
and visited.

When directing for Nisshin City from Seto City through Prefectural road route 57
(commonly called "Seto/Ohbu/Tokai line), turn left at an intermediate between a
signal "Iwasaki Castle North" and next signal "Iwasaki Castle" on the road, and you
can access the parking lot. When directing for Seto City from Nisshin City through
the Prefectural road route 57, turn right at the signal "Iwasaki Castle North" and
advance to south-east about 1 minutes by car, and then you can access the parking
lot.

"Iwasaki Castle" was completed in 1987 when 400 years or over passed after the
castle fell in "Battle of Komaki and Nagakute" (Komaki and Nagakute are name of
places in Owari distrit of Aichi prefecture) in April, 1584. History of the castle will
be favored by Japanese. Fight of fourth-generation lord of the castle, Ujitsugu Niwa
and his younger brother, Ujishige Niwa and his followers against Hideyoshi troops
brought victory of Ieyasu troops over Hideyoshi troops. This fact might be the most
important factor for Ieyasu to win the battle.

Ujishige Niwa, younger brother of fourth-generation lord of the castle died in the battle
with the age of 16. A bronze statue of him was exhibited on 1st floor of "Iwasaki Castle
Memorial Hall". The statue had a fair mustache.

【Remarks】
1 From deserted castle to construction of castle
≪Source: Quoted partially from a monument for construction of "Iwasaki Castle"≫

and his followers on guard at the castle hold a fort against an attack by Ikeda troops
at Hideyoshi side, but Ujishige Niwa and all the soldiers on guard died in the battle.
Although the castle became deserted one after that battle, ruins of the castle has been
kept its shape of 400 years ago in waste land. On April 9, 1984, the day of the castle
-falling, local people at Nisshin City held a ceremony for the repose of dead soldiers soul
and a construction committe of "Iwasaki Castle" was established in accordance with
desire from the local people. Then, the castle was completed in 1987.

2 Complaint of second son of Nobunaga Oda about Hideyoshi's policy
≪Source: Quoted partially from a photo for explanation in "Iwasaki Castle"≫

Hideyoshi had been builing a position as Nobunaga's successor. Nobukatsu Oda, second
son of Nobunaga Oda, showed dissatisfaction with it, and asked for reinforcements from
Ieyasu Tokugawa, lord of Hamamatsu Castle, Tohtohmi (Shizuoka Prefecture at present),
and challenged Hideyoshi to a fight. Placing a temporary home ground at Mt. Komaki
(located in Komaki City, Aichi Prefecture), Ieyasu opposed against Hideyoshi troops
which advanced to Inuyama Castle in March, 1584. Then "Battle of Komaki and Nagakute"
started. This did not bring about full-scale battle and kept being encamped facing each
other. At this time, Ujitsugu Niwa, lord of "Iwasaki Castle" was ordered to guard "Iwasaki
Castle" located near border with Mikawa (eastern part of Aichi prefecture). But, he left
the guarding of the castle up to Ujitsugu and his older sister's husband, and went to
Mt. Komaki for the battle

3 Breaking a deadlock - Mikawa "Nakairi" tactics
≪Source: Quoted partially from a photo for explanation in "Iwasaki Castle"≫

To break a deadlock in the battle, and in accordance with an opinion from Tsuneoki Ikeda,
one of feudal warlords at Hideyoshi side, Hideyoshi troops let his another troop (appinting
Hidetsugu Miyoshi as General) advance secretly and promptly to Okazaki Castle
(Ieyasu base ground) in Mikawa district (south-east of Aichi Prefecture). This tactics is
to disturb rear portion of its opponent and is called Mikawa "Nakairi" tactics. Iwasaki was
located on strategic route to Mikawa district, and Tsuneoki Ikeda who spearheaded the
Ikeda troop of Hideyoshi side started battle against opposing soldiers of Iwasaki Castle
in early morning on April 9, 1584 and defeated them. Then the Castle fell.
Just at that time, Tokugawa troops stationed at Mt. Komak appointed Ujitsugu Niwa
as usher, chased for and caught up with Miyoshi troop (of Hideyoshi side) which
was in the rearmost of Hideyoshi troops. A decisive battle would begin soon.
A front troop of of Hideyoshi side noticed the war situation and returned to Nagakute.
The chase-continuing Tokugawa main troop arrived at Nagakute. A decisive battle began
between the two troops. Influential feudal warlords of Hideyoshi side such as
Tsuneoki Ikeda, Motosuke Ikeda and Nagayoshi Mori died, and ended in victory for allied
forces of Tokugawa and Oda.
In the Komaki-Nagakute Battle, Ieyasu troop challenged and defeated Hideyoshi one
which overwhelmingly maintained its military supremacy over Ieyasu one at that time.
This fact of victory let Ieyasu occupy important position under Hideyoshi even after
Hideyoshi dominated the whole country. So, the Battle will have been a landmark in
Ieyasu's life until when Ieyasu would found the Edo Shogunate (Tokugawa government;
1603-1867).
