常滑

日本６古窯の一つに数えられる常滑焼で有名な愛知県常滑市の
”やきもの散歩道フェスティバル２００２”（開催期間2002年10月12日と13日）に行って
きました。常滑のギャラリー共栄窯で工房を構え陶芸作品を制作しているイギリス人
のピーター・シーブリッジ氏を訪ね、彼の作品の簡単な説明を受けた後、彼の案内で
”やきもの散歩道”を巡りました。
彼の説明では常滑の2種類の土と信楽の土の計3種類の土を使って作品を制作して
いるとの事でした。　（作品の一部は写真参照）
On Oct.12, I went to "Earthenware Promenade Festival 2002" hold in Tokoname City
during from Oct.12 and 13, 2002. Tokoname-ware is famous for one of the Japanese
6 old kilns. I visited Mr. Peter Seabridge who has established a studio called "Gallery
Kyoueigama" and is making the ceramic art work. After his brief explanation on his
work, he kindly guided me to the Earthenware Promenade.
According to him, the work are made using a total of three kinds of clay - two kinds
of clays from Tokoname, and one kind of clay from Shigaraki.

彼の作品とその焼成方法：
１　酸化焼成：　信楽の土を使い施釉表面がピカピカした作品で大窯や登窯で焼成
２　還元焼成：　常滑の土を使い施釉表面がつや消しされた作品で窖窯で焼成
３　中性焼成：　信楽の土を使い窯の中で酸化と還元を繰り返すので施釉表面は
　　　　　　　　　　両方の焼成方法の特徴を兼ね備えている作品で大窯や登窯で
　　　　　　　　　　焼成
（注）
１　彼の説明に対する解釈を一部間違えている可能性あり。
２　作品は灰釉や灰に鉄を混入させた釉薬等、自然釉が主体。
His work and the firing method:
1 Oxidization Firing: Fired in Big Kiln called Oogama or Climbing Kiln, using clay from
　Shigaraki. The glazed surface of the work is shiny.
2 Reduction Firing: Fired in Digged Kiln called Anagama, using clay from Tokoname.
　The glazed surface is as if made in matting.
3 Neutral Firing: Oxidization and Reduction are repeated in Big Kiln or Climbing Kiln,
　 using clay from Shigaraki.. The glazed surface has the characteristic of the both
　 firing.

1 There is possibility for my understanding on his explanation to be wrong.
2 His work features in natural glazing such as ash glaze or mixing glaze of ash with
　iron.

遠く西に工事中の沖合いの国際空港を望む丘の上の一周約2Kmに沿って”やきもの
散歩道フェスティバル”に参加している計約35箇所の陶器店・陶芸品ギャラリーや、
計約27箇所の雑貨や飲食菓子を扱う店が観光客の気持に立って、見学しやすく
配置されています。　この中には陶器・雑貨を扱う店、陶器・飲食菓子を扱う店、
陶器・雑貨・飲食菓子を扱う店も含まれています。この散歩道の途中には登窯、
登窯広場展示工房館、廻船問屋瀧田家、陶磁器会館等が点在しています。
登窯の所では常滑のボランティアの方から熱心に説明を受けました。
Along the path with about 2km of round on the hill which views Chubu International
Airport under constructionoff Tokoname Port in the long distance west,
about 35 china stores/ceramic-works galleries, and about 27 miscellaneous goods
or eating-and-drinking confectioneries are arranged so as to meet with tourists'
feeling. In this, the stores dealing in china/miscellaneous goods, those dealing in
china/eating-and-drinking confectionery, and those dealing in china/miscellaneous
goods/eating-and-drinking confectionery are also included. The promenade is dotted
with the climbing kiln, the climbing kiln open space exhibition studio, shipping agent,
Takita family, the pottery hall, etc. in the middle of this promenade. In the place of
a climbing kiln, the volunteer of Tokoname eagerly gave us the explanation.

感想：
　１　　ピーターが焼いた壷（写真左の大きい壷）は片面に灰釉が施釉され、他面は
　　　　施釉されていないような感じでじっと見ていると味が出てくるような作品。
　２　　海に面しており廻船問屋があるのには内陸部の瀬戸市に住んでいる小生から
　　　　見ると物流面で恵まれているなと感じました。大正時代に鉄道が瀬戸に開通する
　　　　までは荷馬車等に流通を頼らざるを得ない瀬戸に比べ、大量輸送が出来る
　　　　船という手段を持っている常滑は陶器商売でかなり潤ったのではと推測します。
　　　　（機会を見て常滑の窯業の歴史を概括してみようと思っています。）
Impression:
1 The jars Mr. P. Seabridge fired (the larger one shown on the left hand side of photo)
　 are ash-glazed on the one side, and as if the other side does not look like being
　 glazed. When gazing it, a taste look like coming out.
2 The location Tokoname City seemed to be far better than the one in Seto City
　 in terms of distribution because Tokoname faces the sea and had shipping agent
　 in the past while Seto is in inland and relied on a freight wagon for transportation
　 of ceramics until the opening of railway in 1925. So, Tokoname might have had big
　 sale and profit in transaction of ceramics thanks to the mass transportation by ship.
　 (I will study briefly on the history of ceramics in Tokoname later on.)

帰りは半田市の”ごんぎつね”のスーパー銭湯（地下約１５００ｍから涌き出る約５１℃
の食塩泉の天然温泉入浴後、南知多有料道路を通り、大府・瀬戸道路経由瀬戸へ
帰ってきました。
瀬戸市から常滑への所要時間は南知多有料道路を利用して約1時間です。
往路（1時間30分）　：瀬戸ー（国道363号）谷口（左折）ー檀渓通４丁目（右折）ー
　　　（八熊通り）沢上（左折）－（南進して）産業道路ー常滑駅交差点の１つ手前
　　　　を右折－北条（1つ目の交差点）（この角にギャラリー共栄窯があります）
復路：（1時間）北条－半田－知多道路－南知多有料道路ー大府－瀬戸
On way back to Seto, I bathed in super public bath called "Gongitsune" (fox) with
natural hot spring of about 51 degree C brine spring sprung up from about 1500 m
below ground. After that, I passed along the Minamichita toll road and has come
back to Seto via the Obu Seto road.

(Yaguma street) Sawakami (turn left) - (advancing southward) Industrial Road -
one crossing this side of Tokoname Station crossing (turn right) - Kitajo (the first
crossing) (Gallery Kyoeigama is in the corner)
Homeward journey (time required: 1 hour):
Kitajo - Handa - Chita road - South Chita toll road - Oobu - Seto
