２００２年９月１４日のせともの祭の雰囲気を写真でイメージして下さい。
Please see an atmosphere at the 71st Setomono Festiva onOn September 14, 2002,.

昨年はやや天気がぐずついたにもかかわらず、２日間で約５３万人がせともの祭に
来られたので、今年は客足がもっと伸びるかもしれません。
（９月１５日新聞発表では初日２８万人）
Although, last year, the weather remained unsettled, about 530thousands peple visted
this festival in two days. So, this year, the weather is fine and more people is expected
to visit this festival. (280 thousands visitors on the first day, Sep.14, 2002. according
to local newspaper, Chuunichi Newspaper)

せともの祭のお客さんは、当然ながら瀬戸の神社等の観光見学よりも買い物優先
という方が多いようでした。
小生が午前中に案内した若いご夫婦（ご主人はパーシーさん）のコースを歩いた順に
紹介します。（説明の番号と写真の番号は一致しています。）
The visitors to Setomono Festival naturally would like to shop ceramics rather than
sight-seeing of shrine, etc.
I introduce the course in order of walk which I took in the morning with young married
couple (Mr. Percy and his wife) .
(The numbers for the following explanation correspond with the ones for photos.)

１　　名鉄尾張瀬戸駅前の陶板染付体験コーナーにて陶板染付を体験
　　　（写真は染付体験終了後、ブースの前で撮ったもの）
　　　素焼きの陶板（biscuit pottery plate)に鉛筆で概略スケッチを書いた後に、墨の
　　　絵の具(paint)のような呉須(zaffer)に絵筆(painting brush)を漬け、その絵筆を
　　　使って概略スケッチの上をなぞる。今回、は”花”、”葉”、”昆虫”の中から任意
　　　のイメージを描くということでした。この陶板は釉薬を付けて焼かれた後、２００５年
　　　愛知国際万博の会場迄の沿道に永久に設置されます。

　　＊瀬戸染付の絵付は画布に見たてられた素地に呉須の濃淡で水墨画のような、
　　　　繊細で緻密な絵を描くものです。
１　　 Experiences with underglaze on pottery plate at the experience corner in front
　　　 of Owari Seto station of private railway, Meitetsu Seto Line
　　　 (The photo was taken after finishing the experience.) The manner is as follows:
　　　 After drawing rough sketch with pencil on a biscuit pottery plate, dip a painting
　　　 brush in zaffer (or paint) and outline with thin tip brush, and then paint with a
　　　 thicker brush. The theme for underglaze this time is "flower", "leaf" or "insect".
　　　 So, we drew each outline in accordance with each image corresponding the theme
.　　　The drawn biscuit pottery plate will be glazed and fired., and placed for ever along
　　　 the road from Seto to the site of International Exhibition of Aichi 2005
　　　
　　 * Blue underglaze is called Seto-Sometsuke. This is to draw delicate and precise
　　　 picture with shade of zaffer like a drawing in India ink on canvas-like biscuit ware .

２　　窯神神社
　　　手水舎（写真参照）にて心身を清め境内に入った。
　　　境内には次の銅像等があります。
　　　①加藤民吉：　瀬戸の陶磁器の磁祖
　　　②加藤唐左衛門：　加藤民吉が九州有田で学んだ技法に基づき製造した陶磁器
　　　　を江戸初め全国への販売ルートに乗せた江戸時代の尾張藩内の政商
　　　③津金文左衛門胤臣：　公私にわたり民吉が陶器の研究に精を出せるように援助
　　　　してくれた熱田奉行

　　　瀬戸市の繁栄が今日あるのは加藤民吉に負うところ大です。この民吉に感謝し、
　　　今後も瀬戸が繁栄することを祈る産業祭がせともの祭です。

　　　神社の境内から北側に瀬戸のグランドキャニオン（陶土採掘場）が見えます。
２　　Kamagami Shrine
　　　At the hand washing house (See the photo) in Kamagami Shrine, we washed hands
　　　and entered into the precinct.
　　　① Mr. Tamikichi Kato: Founder of Seto porcelain
　　　② Mr. Tozaemon Kato: Businessman with political contacts in the domain of
　　　　　Owari (Aichi Pref. at present) in Edo era (1642 - 1868). He marketed and
　　　　　expanded the sale of porcelain products manufactured by technology Tamikichi
　　　　　learned in Kyushu (or northern island of Japan).
　　 ③ Mr. Bunzaemon Tsugane: The magistrate in Atsuta district (Nagoya at present)
　　　　 supporting Tamikichi and his father officially and privately in order for them to
　　　　　be able to study ceramics.

　　　Prosperity of Seto city is mainly owing to Tamikichi. Setomono Festival is held in
　　　honor of Tamikichi Kato and the biggest festival in terms of industrial festival in
　　　Japan.

　　　Grand Canyon of Seto (pottery clay and silica sand mining field) are viewed from
　　　this precinct towards north.

３　　無風庵
　　　藤井達吉は愛知県が生んだ偉大な芸術家で愛知県碧海郡棚尾村（現碧南市）に
　　　生まれました。　彼が小原村で開いていた塾が無風庵で塾生に多くの瀬戸の陶芸家
　　　がいたので小原村ではなく、瀬戸にその庵が移築されることになった。
３　 Mufuuan (building with thatched roof)
　　　Mr. Tatsukichi Fujii is one of great artists in Aichi. He run a cramming school called
　　　 'Mufuuan' in Obara village where many ceramic artists from Seto gathered.
　　　Therefore, Mufuuan has been dismantled and reconstructed in Seto.

４　　法雲寺
　　　陶製梵鐘（第２次大戦中金属回収令で梵鐘を供出させられ、代用品として昭和１７年
　　　（１９４２年）制作された。現存するのは全国でこれだけと思われる。
４　　Houunji Temple
　　　Bell of Buddhist temple was delivered due to metal collecting law during the Second
　　　World War. So, the substitute was made of ceramics in 1942.

５　　中学校の露店
　　　瀬戸市民会館駐車場に瀬戸市内の中学校の内２校が出店
５　　Stalls of junior highschool students
　　　Stalls of 2 junior highschools among Seto City junior highschools are exhibiting
　　　their handmade pottery works in the parking lot of Seto Citizen Hall.

６　　瀬戸市民会館駐車場付近の道路端から窯神橋方面を撮影
　　　市民会館は間もなく取り壊され、瀬戸市の文化情報発信施設として新築予定。
　　　１９６３年小生が中学３年生の時に文化祭が行われた想い出の場所。　　
　　　＊　市民会館の”さよならコンサート”へ９月１５日行って来ました。その様子とか
　　　　　陶壁の写真とかは改めて、ページを設けて紹介する予定です。

６　　View of Kamagami Bridge area from the road near Seto Citizen Hall
　　　Seto Citizen Hall will be broken soon and a building will be built on the same spot
　　　as cultural information dissemination facility.
　　　At this Citizen Hall in the third grade of my junior highschool days, my school
　　　cultural festival was held in 1963. So, I am not sure, but the Citizen Hall lasts for
　　　40 years.
　　　* I will make out the other page for farewell to the Citizen Hall early in this Oct.

７　　典型的な露店
　　１２：３０頃パーシーさんご夫妻に紹介し、小生は、ここでご夫妻と別れました。
７　　Typical stall
　　　This is a shop and stall . I parted from the guests at this shop at around 12:30.

８　　せともの人形
　　　恒例の陶製人形で、その年話題のマスメディアから題材を取り、制作される。
　　　今年はNHK大河ドラマを題材とし”利家とまつ”の人形が制作された。
８　　Setomono Doll
　　　This doll is produced by ceramics tablewares such as plate or bowl.
　　　This year, taking a hint from NHK TV popular program titled "Toshiie and Matsu",
　　　Setomono Doll was produced.
　　　* Toshiie is Mr. Toshiie Maeda who was born in Owari (Aichi Pref. at present) and
　　　　became the lord of the domain of Kaga (Ishikawa Pref. at present) and effected
　　　　the most influence on Tokugawa Shogunate because Kaga has abundant crop of
　　　　rice and took the important location with regard to Mr Kenshin Uesugi, lord warrior
　　　　in Echigo domain (Niigata Pref. at present) and the former Toyotomi-supporting
　　　　lord warriors in western districts.
　　　　Matsu is his wife.

９　　食事処
　　　文化センター方面(駐車場）への帰りの道すがら和食の食事処に入りました。

　　　米国の皆さんが駐車場集合。

　　　今度は一人で祭にまた繰り出していきました。

　　　 I went out to Setomono Festival again by myself this time.
